Many a couple will be rocking new diamond jewelry this Valentine’s Day. This is a long-respected tradition, and diamond jewelry is among the top 3 gifts on Valentine’s Day. However, some minerals are much rarer than what you’ll find on your Valentine’s jewelry. A paper to be published in American Mineralogist, and quoted by LA Times, presents the first system for categorizing rarities in the mineral world, and lists the rarest minerals on Earth.

Take the pink mineral cobaltomenite, for example, which can found only in Argentina, Bolivia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Utah. It is so rare, that it could all fit into a shot glass.

Another example is the fingerite, which has only been found near the summit of the Izalco volcano in El Salvador. It is made of rare elements, it dissolves in the rain, and it only forms under specific conditions that occur near active volcanoes.

Another rare mineral is Hazenite, which has only been found in Mono Lake in the California desert, and only on certain days of the year.

Nevadaite is another rare mineral. It has striking blue crystals and is made of the scarce elements vanadium and copper.  Nevadaite has only been found in two places: Eureka County in Nevada and a copper mine in Kyrgyzstan.
