Getting comfortable with Carats
DiamondWaveA carat is one of the "4 C's of Diamonds" (including carat, color, clarity and cut) and a carat is basically the unit of measurement used to describe the weight of an individual diamond! The word 'carat' derives from the carob tree, where tiny seeds of the tree are known for their uniformity and consistent weight.
Traditionally, diamonds and gemstones were weighted in comparison with the seeds of the carob tree until a standardized system was established. A 1-carat was then fixed at .2 grams.
1-carat is divided into 100 points, just like a dollar is divided in to 100 pennies! A diamond weighing one quarter is then described as 25 points or .25 carat or 1/4 carat.
To check out a nifty visual aid, hop on over to the Carat Information page, it'll help you get an idea of the size of gems at different carats!
