Andy Warhol photographed Muhammad Ali for the first time as part of his 1977 Athletes series. Sport starts were a natural progression for Warhol and his preoccupation with fame and celebrity status.
‘I said that the athletes were better than movie stars and I don’t know what I’m talking about because athletes are the new movie stars,’ he once said.
