A new startup by the name of Leaf Wearables is trying to make a positive change in India, where a sexual assault occurs every 22.5 minutes. According to CNN Money, five young engineering students at India's top colleges launched the smart jewelry startup to help women defend themselves.

At the heart of each of Leaf Wearables pendant, bracelet and key chain is a small circular device called SAFER, which works in two ways: When a threat is perceived, the user double clicks the SAFER device that's attached to the jewelry. This triggers the corresponding app, and an SMS alert is sent to the wearer's network – family and friends. The app also has a GPS function and a map showing the nearest hospitals and police stations.

The jewelry costs between $52 and $74 and takes just 15 minutes to charge for a week of use. According to the founders, who spoke to CNN, they’ve already sold 5,000 pieces, including 1,000 to customers in Turkey.
