In addition to being a girl’s best friends, diamonds have many technological and medical uses. According to NBC news, that now includes the operating table, where diamonds are being used to break through blocked arteries connecting to the heart.

According to interventional cardiologist Dr. Corey Foster, who’s interviewed in the piece, Diamondback 360 - a diamond-coated crown that's mounted on a wire – is being used to treat patients who need immediate and emergency treatments.

The diamond coated crown, only one and one quarter millimeters in size, is mounted on a wire that passes into the coronary artery. According to Foster, it spins very rapidly, between 80 and 120,000 revolutions per minute. As it spins, it breaks up the plaque into tiny particles. The plaque removal takes about ten minutes. Once the wire does its thing and the plaque is removed, the procedure continues with a stent placement.
