#Diamond demand may grow like last year: De Beers

Global diamond consumption in 2018 may continue to grow like last year provided the US-China trade war and currency fluctuations do not affect consumer spending, a top executive of the world’s leading diamond producer De Beers has said.

In 2017, global diamond consumption rose by 2.2 per cent to $82 billion, led by demand in the US and China, according to Diamond Insight Report 2018, which De Beers released on Thursday. “The global demand for diamonds in 2018 will be driven by the US and China,” Esther Oberbeck, group head of strategy at De Beers, told ET over the phone from Hong Kong. “US market expectations remain positive, with growth likely to remain steady. Stable growth is expected in China, owing to continued economic strength and consumer confidence.”
