A fairly low-level con is gaining national press in Britain, mainly due to the unbelievable gullibility of its victims. According to The Daily Mail, conmen scammed jewelry dealers out of diamonds, jewelry and watches worth over £500,000 by using… Monopoly money.
The conmen, who operated in London, Bristol and Leeds, switched real Euros with bundles of fake facsimile notes or “Monopoly” money, and the victims were tricked despite using a pen or a machine to count the bundles of cash.
Gianni Accamo, 44, is linked to all three scams, according to a trial held currently at Bristol Crown Court. He is thought to belong to a gang that targeted an Australian jeweler operating in London, a £420,000 fraud in Bristol involving another jeweler and a £192,000 scam in Leeds.
