As of 2016, Israel is the world's diamond capital. About half of all diamonds sold for jewelry arrive from Israel. Israel is a preferred destination for wholesalers, business owners, and individuals interested in purchasing high quality diamonds at competitive prices. Israel is also known for the use of advanced technologies in the manufacturing of jewelry.

Thousands of people work at the Israel Diamond Exchange, including many diamond dealers capable of providing for diamond buyers from all over the world. The Israeli Diamond Exchange has approximately 3,000 members. It is in charge of establishing rules, regulations and norms of diamond trading.

How did it all begin?

The Israeli Diamond Exchange is a prominent example of the diligence of Jews who came to Israel from all over the world to make a dream come true: building a new country through a profession that combines both creativity and trade.

The dream of a diamond center was “imported” to Israel by Jews whose profession was diamond manufacturing and trade, and escaped Europe in the 1930s and prior to WWII from Belgium and the Netherlands. At the same time, Jews from Bukhara who specialized in jewelry making and trade also immigrated to Israel.

In 1940, the first diamond exchange was established in Alenbi Street in Tel Aviv. In 1946, the first Israeli diamond exchange was established, conducting its business from a coffee shop called "Palatin".

In 1964, the Municipality of Ramat Gan assigned an area near the train station for the Israel Diamond Exchange, and the first building, called “Shimshon”, was erected. By the end of the 1970s, Israel became the world's leader in the manufacturing and export of diamonds, and by the end of the 1990s, the export of diamonds was a $5 billion industry.

Israel is considered an internationally renowned center for polishing diamonds, and Israeli companies are considered both innovative and technologically groundbreaking. When purchasing diamonds in the Israel Diamond Exchange, buyers enjoy not only a large variety of diamonds at competitive prices, but also a high level of security. The Israel Diamond Exchange works diligently to maintain the high standards of trade while adhering to both Israeli and the international laws.

The United States is the main destination of polished diamond exports from Israel. Other major destinations include China, Hong Kong, Belgium, Britain, Australia and Singapore.
