The matte white Diamond Himalaya Niloticus crocodile diamond Birkin 30, with 18k white gold and 245 F-color diamonds weighing a total of 9.84 carats, was just sold for the mind-blowing sum $300,168. According to Christie’s, this makes it the most expensive handbag ever sold at auction.
The Birkin 30, named after Christie’s 30th Anniversary Sale, was sold Monday (May 30) and shattered the record previously held by of a fuchsia diamond-studded Hermes Birkin, which sold for $222,000 last year.
According to the auction house, “the diamond pieces created by Hermes are exceptional, but none are nearly as iconic as the Himalaya” – as only one or two are produced each year, globally.
According to New York-based appraiser Helaine Fendelman, who talked to CNN on the subject, the Hermes Birkin’s “rarity and exclusivity, the quality of leather and craftsmanship, its style and the ability to customize” – all make it the most valuable bag in the world today. No one knows how many are manufactured each year, which just adds to the allure and desirability of the item.
