It’s a goal that many women (and men) often have for their partners, but the perfect date outfit isn’t always as easy as a Netflix-and-chill night. So in search of answers on how to dress for any occasion, we sought out advice from the Cleveland Cavaliers’s stellar and chic Kevin Love, who is also Banana Republic’s men’s global style ambassador. “Date night should be relaxed,” said Love. “I don’t like to wear anything too formal. A pair of jeans with a sweater or T-shirt is perfect with a cool pair of sneakers.” And while that ensemble seems to have worked wonders for distinguished gents like George Clooney, there are times where something more formal fits the bill. “You can’t go wrong with a tailored suit,” said Love. “You can dress it up or down, depending on the occasion, by separating the pieces or wearing it with or without a jacket and tie.” And while not every man is going to be the suit wearer—think Mark Zuckerberg and many of his Silicon Valley compatriots—the alternatives are equally elegant. In rich flannels or modern mock-necks, guys can easily emulate icons like James Dean and Steve McQueen with equal parts cool and polish. “I’m a fan of clothes that combine style and comfort,” said Love, who also preaches the power of accessorizing. “Glasses, bracelets, and a smaller necklace add some fun to your outfit and showcase your personality.” For the truly bold, he suggests stepping up the fashion quotient with a piece more often associated with the international jet set. “I will also wear an occasional ascot or handkerchief to have some fun,” the power forward said. He has a go-to, however, for adding instant panache to literally any outfit. “I’m into everything camel,” he said. “I really love the camel topcoat from Banana Republic.
