“How can I beat that?” exclaimed Gwyneth Paltrow on the Tom Ford for Gucci red velvet suit she sported to the MTV VMA ceremony in September 1996. And while velvet might be a holiday party staple, the actress eschews the fabric in lieu of something a tad more streamlined. “Usually black and sparkles,” said Paltrow. “I look for something classic, but a little bit different.” That was true at last week’s LACMA gala where Paltrow stunned in a sequin-topped mini frock from Gucci. And last night at Spring Studios where she helped celebrate Frederique Constant’s horological smartwatch, the actress was dressed in her go-to uniform of a mini-LBD and coordinating Christian Louboutins punctuated with a heart-shaped embellishment. She was already in gear for the season, divulging some of her favorite party-dressing secrets. “It’s nice, for a holiday, [to have] a little sparkle, whether it’s an earring or a Louboutin,” said Paltrow, noting that her jewelry arsenal is all about the details, consisting of “a bunch of little things.” But when it comes to shoes, she tends to go bold—and steep. “Looks-wise, something like [these Louboutin stilettos are] pretty great but it’s incredibly uncomfortable,” laughed Paltrow, adding, “I was hobbling up the ramp.” The cookbook author keeps things more comfortable when she’s working. “Sneakers or flip-flops,” she said of her choice kitchen footwear, contrasting her co-author Mario Batali’s penchant for Crocs. And for downtime moments with the kids or friends at home? “Pajamas!” said Paltrow. “We just made the most amazing pair of chic pajamas for the Goop label. They’re a little culotte and kind of a big, men’s short-sleeved shirt.” For those who aren’t ready to take pajama dressing on the town, never fear. Paltrow will soon be adding her party uniform to Goop’s repertoire, too—and just in time. “In fact, for December our next drop is all about party dressing,” she said. Any hints? “It’s black. It’s strapless. I better stop there,” said Paltrow with a coy smile. And no doubt it will be a winning look . . . whether with heels or sneakers.
