A brief lesson in color theory: Colors that are diametrically opposed on the color wheel are actually at their best when paired. Need proof? Take red and green, which, beyond their obvious Christmassy connotations, are opposites on the wheel, and so an obvious match. But what if you’d like to try the shades outside of the month of December? What if you’re worried about looking like an elf? First step, avoid Crayola hues in favor of more sophisticated shades—these are typically more subdued. Want something brighter? The trick is to choose one of the two colors as your focal point and to use the other as an accent. A few high-profile examples from real life: At the 2011 Met Gala, Mary-Kate Olsen donned a red gown with an emerald green choker and matching bracelets and rings. She even added red nails to really drive home the color scheme. There are other tricks, too: Beyoncé took a different, but equally enticing approach, pairing a hunter green patterned top with an almost-burgundy patterned skirt to stay subtly in step with the trend. There’s no reason to look or feel like a walking Christmas tree skirt. Here, nine ways to get in the spirit all year long.
