Record Breaking Weddings: The Biggest and Brashest of Nuptials
VashiAll couples want their wedding to be memorable, but some won’t settle for any less than the best. Guinness has been compiling records for decades now, and when it comes to weddings they don’t disappoint. Here are some of biggest and wildest weddings the world, and Guinness, has ever seen.
Biggest Wedding Reception
When former movie star and chief minister Jayalalitha Jayaram’s foster son tied the knot, he did so in style. The wedding, rumoured to have cost near 750 million rupees (over 7 million pounds!), was held in Madras India, hosting over 150,000 guests. Despite being held over 20 years ago, the record remains unbroken even today.
Largest Underwater Wedding
Whilst Ewa Staronska and Pawel Burkowski of Poland decided to get married, they wanted the biggest wedding possible, with one slight caveat. It had to be underwater. 303 scuba divers attended the ceremony, which lasted 18 minutes and even included a ‘scuba-priest’. The couple said their “I dos’” via a mixture of sign language and waterproof text, proving that even a wall of water can’t keep love apart.
Most Epic Wedding Cake
For some people, a wedding is about love and commitment, sharing in the couple’s special moment together. For other, less romantic souls, the food is the highlight, especially the cake. The largest wedding cake ever was unveiled in Uncxasville Connecticut, and weighed a massive 6.818 tonnes, 15,032 lbs. It’s safe to say no one was left wanting for food after that!
Priciest Pet Wedding
If an ‘I do’ can be said via sign language underwater, then why not by bark? Chilly Pasternak the Poodle and Baby Hope Diamond the Coton de Tulear, were married in the city of New York, in a ceremony costing nearly $270,000. Whilst some might say that’s a lot to pay for two dogs to take each other’s paw in marriage, the wedding elements were sold off and donated, raising money and awareness for the Humane Society of New York.
Bridesmaids
No bride is truly wedding ready without a trusted bridesmaid at her side; preferably more than one. However, when Tina Ackles and Thomas Rodgers were planning their wedding, Tina took no chances. Her wedding, held in sunny Florida, had 168 bridesmaids in attendance. It’s fair to say that the bouquet from that wedding wasn’t easy to catch.
Most Watched Wedding of all Time
Whilst we’ve covered the biggest wedding reception ever, last on our list is the most watched ceremony. When HRH Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer on the 29 of July, 1981, 750,000,000 tuned in from 74 countries. India may have the record for largest reception ever, but Diana’s special day holds the record for most watched wedding ceremony of all time.
