The perfect romance: our favourite fictional couples
VashiThe almost idyllic relationships of on-screen couples helped us develop unrealistic romantic expectations, but that’s okay. To commemorate the best on-screen romances we’ve taken a trip down memory lane to show you our favourite fictional couples – do you agree with our choices?
Friends: Ross Gellar and Rachel Green
She was his lobster and he was her lobster! The relationship between this awesome twosome was rocky to say the least, but it kept us on our toes and ultimately, captivated our hearts. We all knew right from the start that these two were meant to be together and although they kept us on the edge of our seats for over 10 seasons – ‘she got off the plane’ – the couple had their happy ending that left us all sobbing.
Friends: Monica Gellar and Chandler Bing
The biggest love story on Friends was, of course, the will they?/won’t they? setup of Ross and Rachel’s tumultuous relationship. But it was Monica and Chandler’s love story that truly portrayed the real ins and outs of an honest, loving relationship. They had their share of difficulties, but they understood, communicated and loved each other wholeheartedly – and as avid viewers we couldn’t help but swoon!
The Notebook: Allie and Noah
It is possibly one of the best love stories of all time. When country boy Noah met Allie at a summer fair, they both had an idyllic summer romance, which eventually turned into an intense, burning love for one-another. Even though the odds were against them, they fought through their adversaries and found true happiness in each other. The beautiful ending illustrates how they can overcome any obstacle and find true solace together – if that doesn’t make your heart melt, we don’t know what will!
Up: Carl and Ellie Fredricksen
Tissues at the ready! In the opening minutes of this animated flick, you are introduced to Carl and Ellie and their beautifully touching, yet heartbreaking romantic tale. In those precious few scenes, their unbreakable bond, constant support for one another and pure happiness is more than evident – as is the sheer heartbreak Carl suffers once Ellie passes. Although the sequence of their tale was short, it left an imprint in our hearts forever and we couldn’t help but cheer Carl on when he finally fulfilled their childhood dream of going to Paradise Falls!
Titanic: Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater
Not all fairy tales have their happy ending, some are heart-rending. This is certainly the case for Jack and Rose on board the Titanic. Although the pair came from two very different backgrounds, the attraction and connection between the two was instant. And even though their paths crossed only for a short while, this wondrous moment (until the untimely tragedy occurred) impacted them (and us) immensely.
The Addams Family: Morticia and Gomez
In most modern day romances, you are only shown the prelude to the relationship, but not what precedes. Do they get married? Do they go on to have kids? Are they still happy together? That is until the Addams family hopped onto the scene. They showed us what a happily married, yet a perfectly weird couple who were still madly in love looks like. Plus, they sure knew how to keep the spark alive and well!
